Using BlowerXpert 7 on Microsoft® Windows® Vista® operating system (64-bit only)

In order to use BlowerXpert on a computer running Microsoft® Windows® Vista® 64-bit operating system, you must follow this procedure:

1. Download and install BlowerXpert to another Windows 32-bit (non-Vista) computer using the default install settings.

If only another Vista computer is available. See “Installing BlowerXpert 7 on Microsoft® Windows® Vista® operating system (32-bit only)” for instructions on how to install BlowerXpert 7 to a Vista 32-bit computer, then continue to Step 2.

2. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\BlowerXpert folder on the computer used in step 1 and copy the contents of the folder to a jump drive or other device that your Vista computer can access.

3. Create a folder somewhere on the Vista computer. DO NOT attempt to create a folder inside the Program Files folder. The recommended path is C:\BlowerXpert.

4. Copy the files you copied from the 32-bit computer into the folder you created on the Vista 64-bit computer.

5. Locate the file blowerxpert7.exe in the folder to where you just copied the files.

6. Right-click on the blowerxpert7.exe file, create a shortcut to the program and place it on the desktop (for convenient access)

7. Double-click the shortcut and BlowerXpert should open. It will ask you to accept the EULA.

8. Once you accept the EULA, you must register the software. It is not known when BlowerXpert calls your MAPI (email) client program to send your registration. If BlowerXpert stops responding, force it closed, reopen BlowerXpert and choose the print option for registration.

Updating BlowerXpert on a Windows Vista 64-bit system:

This may prove to be very difficult. To minimize the download time for an update, the update files are compressed using the Microsoft LZ compression algorithm. But, it uses a 16-bit program called COMPRESS.EXE. Most 16-bit executables do not run on Vista 64, but since this is a Microsoft-created executable, it is possible it will run

Test this by opening BlowerXpert and selecting File > Check for Update, and running through the wizard.

If the wizard fails, it is most likely due to the 16-bit COMPRESS.EXE not being allowed to run. This means that you will have a bunch of compressed files in your folder that can’t get expanded.

It is possible that current versions of WinZip can correctly expand the compressed files (identifiable with a _ at the end of the file extension such as .EX_ and .DA_ ), however, it may not expand with the correct file names. When COMPRESS.EXE is used, the resulting file may go from blowerxpert7.exe to BLOWER~1.EXE. WinZip may not understand to expand the file with the correct name, which could be a BIG problem, because BlowerXpert calls those file names when needed.

If the update procedure does not work, you then will have to repeat the steps listed in the “To Use BlowerXpert” section above. Whenever TVBS deploys an update to BlowerXpert 7, a new install set with identical code and data is also deployed.
